چکیده

Indirect estimates of instantaneous natural mortality rate (M) are widely used in stock assessment and fi sheries management. They are essentially a form of meta-analysis, in which prior information on M and key life history parameters from a variety of stocks is used to estimate M for the stock in question. In this study we report indirect estimates of M for arrowtooth fl ounder (Atheresthes stomias) and darkblotched rockfi sh (Sebastes crameri) obtained by the methods described in Gunderson (1997), and a modifi cation of Pauly’s method (1980), and compare them with estimates previously derived by Hoenig’s (1983) method. Pauly’s original method was based on the correlation of M with von Bertalanffy growth parameters (K and L∞) and temperature. The modifi cation we used was indicated by a number of reviews of Pauly’s data (Charnov, 1993; Pascual and Iribarne, 1993; Jensen, 1996) and relies only on the correlation between M and K. The high correlation between these variables has been observed in a number of taxa and is the basis for the M–K “invariIndirect estimates of natural mortality rate for arrowtooth fl ounder (Atheresthes stomias) and darkblotched rockfi sh (Sebastes crameri)

Temporal Variability in the Food Habits of Arrowtooth Flounder (Atheresthes stomias) in the Western Gulf of Alaska

Withinand among-year variations in the diet and feeding activity of arrowtooth flounder (Atheresthes stomias) were examined in order to expand the existing knowledge of their food habits to include temporal variability in the western Gulf of Alaska. Stomach samples were collected during bottom trawl surveys conducted near Kodiak Island, Alaska, in May and August 2002-2004. In 2002 and 2003, wal...

Estimation of effective population size for the long-lived darkblotched rockfish Sebastes crameri.

We report the variance effective population size (Ne) in darkblotched rockfish (Sebastes crameri) utilizing the temporal method for overlapping generations, which requires a combination of age-specific demography and genetic information from cohorts. Following calculations of age-specific survival and reproductive success from fishery data, we genotyped a sample (n = 1087) comprised by 6 cohort...

Food Consumption and Growth of Juvenile Arrowtooth Flounders

Food consumption and growth of juvenile arrowtooth flounders Atheresthes stomias were examined in the laboratory. Weight gain, Y (in % BW/d) was related linearly to food consumption, X (in J/g/d): Y = 0.0033X 0.0564; r 2 = 0.75 at 4°C. Fish 30 to 300 g had similar energy conversion efficiencies. When fed Pacific herring Clupea pallasi at 4°C, maintenance ration was estimated to be 17 J/g/d. Min...

Spawning, egg development, and early life history dynamics of arrowtooth flounder (Atheresthes stomias) in the Gulf of Alaska

Arrowtooth flounder (Atheresthes stomias) has the highest biomass of any groundfish species in the Gulf of Alaska, is a voracious predator of age 1 walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma), and is a major component in the diet of Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus). Owing to its ecological importance in the Gulf of Alaska and the limited information available on its reproduction, interest has...

The potential role of marine reserves in the management of shortraker rockfi sh (Sebastes borealis) and rougheye rockfi sh (S. aleutianus) in the Gulf of Alaska

Over 70 species of rockfi sh (genus Sebastes) inhabit the geographic region between the Gulf of California and the Bering Sea, and many of these species are important components in the groundfi sh fi sheries in this region. Rockfi sh are viviparous, and several species mature slowly (>5–10 years), have long life spans (50–140 years), and are particularly vulnerable to overfi shing. Several spec...
